Speaker not working — fix laptop, iPhone, and TV audio output

When speakers go silent, the sound is usually still playing perfectly well, just somewhere else: a headphone jack the computer thinks is occupied, a dock, or a pair of earbuds sitting in another room.

Your sound is probably going somewhere else

Turning the volume up won’t help if your computer is sending audio to a monitor, a dock, or the earbuds you left charging in the kitchen. Wrong output device explains more silent speakers than blown drivers ever will, so that’s where this guide starts.

Every modern operating system keeps a list of possible destinations: internal speakers, HDMI or DisplayPort audio on a monitor, USB headsets, HDMI ARC to a TV, and however many Bluetooth devices you’ve paired over the years. Connect a dock or use wireless earbuds once and the machine may quietly keep that as its default from then on.

There’s a quick tell for this. If Bluetooth headphones play perfectly while the laptop speakers stay silent, the amplifier and drivers inside the laptop are probably fine and you have a routing problem. Open the output list, select the built-in speakers explicitly, and disconnect anything you’re not using while you work through this.

One warning about browsers: a web page usually can’t override the system default. If a tab won’t switch devices, change the output in system settings first and then reload the page.

Narrowing it down

The specific symptom tells you which section below to read.

Total silence everywhere, including interface sounds and notifications, means mute, the default device, or a headphone route the system hasn’t let go of. Silence on just one side means the balance slider, a half-seated cable, or a failed driver. Sound that only plays through headphones means the system still believes headphones are plugged in. Muffled or crackling audio is a different problem entirely, usually enhancements, a sample-rate conflict, or physical damage. And audio that’s fine everywhere except one application means that app’s own mute or its private output picker.

Windows

Laptop speakers not working on Windows almost always comes down to the default device, exclusive mode, or enhancements.

Open Settings, System, Sound, and set the correct output device. Click through to the device’s properties and check the left and right balance sliders, plus any spatial sound feature you didn’t mean to turn on. If one side is missing or the channels sound swapped, this is where the answer usually is.

Then work through mute at every level. Unmute the system, unmute the browser, and unmute the specific app in the volume mixer. Windows remembers per-app volumes, and a browser tab muted three weeks ago looks identical to dead speakers.

Exclusive mode is worth a look if one call app silences everything else. In the classic Sound control panel, open the playback device’s properties, go to Advanced, and temporarily untick exclusive control. In the same area, turn enhancements off if you’re hearing crackling or if the device reports itself as working but produces nothing useful.

Docks and HDMI displays deserve their own check. A USB-C dock or a connected monitor frequently takes over as the default endpoint. Unplug the dock once as a test, and if sound returns to the laptop, set the internal speakers as your default so it stops happening.

macOS

Open System Settings, Sound, Output, pick the Mac’s own speakers or whichever device you actually want, and centre the balance slider while you’re there.

macOS switches to HDMI or USB audio quite happily whenever a display or interface connects, and it doesn’t make a fuss about it. The Sound icon in the menu bar is the fastest way to see where your audio is currently going.

If the balance slider is pushed hard to one side, one speaker will sound completely dead. Centre it before you conclude anything about hardware. Bluetooth devices that disconnect part-way through a video can also leave the Mac in a confused state, so toggle Bluetooth or remove the stale device and reselect the internal speakers.

iPhone and iPad

Start with the obvious three: the ring and silent switch on an iPhone, the volume level while you’re inside the app that’s quiet, and the audio destination in Control Center, which may be pointing at a Bluetooth device or an AirPlay target.

It’s worth understanding that iPhones have two separate speakers. The small earpiece at the top handles calls, and the louder speaker at the bottom handles media. They fail independently. If callers sound silent but music plays loudly on speakerphone, clean the earpiece grille, take the case off, and try with Bluetooth disabled. If music is quiet while calls are fine, look at the loudspeaker and at whether a Focus mode is affecting volume.

Water and dust in the grille produce the muffled sound people notice after a day at the beach or a week of pocket lint. Power the phone down and clear the mesh gently. Don’t blast compressed air straight into it, which can drive debris further in. If both the earpiece and the loudspeaker have failed across every app while Bluetooth audio still works, a service appointment is reasonable, because software toggles rarely revive both at once.

TVs and external speakers

A Samsung TV speaker not working, or any smart TV for that matter, usually means the TV’s audio output is set to a soundbar, an AV receiver, or Bluetooth headphones, with the internal speakers switched off as a result. Open the TV’s own sound output menu and select the TV speakers. Check mute and volume on the TV itself rather than only on the cable box, and consider whether HDMI-CEC has redirected audio on your behalf.

If you’ve connected a PC to the TV, set the TV as your output only when you actually want sound coming from it. ARC and eARC chains fail silently when the soundbar is powered off, and the computer carries on believing the HDMI audio path is perfectly valid.

External speakers follow the basics. Powered speakers need their own supply plugged in and switched on, and a 3.5 mm plug that isn’t pushed all the way home will kill one channel every time. If what you really want to check is headset stereo separation rather than room speakers, a headphone left and right check is the better follow-up once the main output path is confirmed.

Muffled, crackling, or only in one app

Crackling during loud passages or frequency sweeps can be a failing amplifier, a mismatched sample rate, or enhancements fighting the audio stream. Turn the enhancements off, try a different cable or port, and compare against headphones to see whether the fault follows the output.

Muffled laptop speakers after a spill or a long build-up of dust need physical cleaning or a service visit. An EQ app can’t undo water damage to a driver.

When only one application is silent, look at that app’s mute state, its own output device menu, and whether exclusive mode let it capture the endpoint and hold onto it. When every app is silent through the speakers but headphones work, go back to the output selection section, because that pattern is routing rather than anything more exotic.

One channel at a time

With the correct output selected and everything unmuted, the last step is checking each channel on its own. Open a left and right channel check, play left alone, then right alone, and run a sweep if you’ve been hearing buzzes or suspect a dead frequency range. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

If your system plays interface sounds but one channel never shows up here, you’ve found a balance, wiring, or driver fault. If nothing plays at all once the routing is correct, you have a clear case for a warranty claim or a repair.
