Headphone jack not working — fix one-sided audio and silent earbuds

If one ear has gone quiet, reach for a torch before you reach for Device Manager. Pocket lint packed into a 3.5 mm port stops the plug seating fully, and that alone kills a channel.

Look inside the port first

The 3.5 mm socket on a laptop or phone spends its life pointing upwards in a bag or a pocket, and it collects an impressive amount of lint. Compressed debris at the bottom of the port holds the plug a millimetre or two short of full depth, and that’s enough for some of the contacts on the plug to miss their pins entirely.

This is the most common physical reason for hearing sound in one ear only, and it takes two minutes to rule out.

Power the device down and shine a bright light straight into the port. You’re looking for a grey felt-like plug of compressed lint at the bottom, which is easy to mistake for the base of the socket itself. Pick it out with a wooden toothpick or a plastic pick, never a metal pin or a paperclip, since those can bridge the contacts and cause real damage. Blow out whatever’s loose afterwards.

Then push the plug in firmly until it seats flush or clicks. Wiggle it gently while audio is playing. If the sound cuts in and out as you move it, either the detect switch inside the socket or the barrel of the plug is worn, and cleaning won’t be enough.

What each symptom points at

Complete silence from the jack, while the speakers still work, means the output device selection, mute, or whether the computer noticed the headset at all.

Sound in one ear only sends you back to the port, the plug, the cable near the strain relief, or the balance slider, roughly in that order of likelihood.

Channels arriving on the wrong side is worth checking against the L and R markings on the earcups first, and then the balance and any channel-swap enhancement.

Crackling as the cable moves is mechanical every time. Dirty socket, worn plug, or broken conductors near where the cable meets the plug.

Headphones showing as connected but producing no sound usually means the sense pin has detected the plug while the audio contacts are dirty, or the wrong endpoint is selected.

Try the same headset on a phone before going further. If it works there, focus on the computer. If the same ear is silent on both, the headphones are the problem and you can stop reading settings menus.

Windows and macOS output settings

On Windows, right-click the speaker icon and open Sound settings, or go to Settings, System, Sound. Set the output to your wired headphones rather than the speakers or some Bluetooth device you paired last month. Then open the device’s properties and look at the left and right balance sliders. A slider parked at one extreme is a genuinely frequent cause of sound in one ear, usually because someone dragged it while trying to adjust volume. Turn off audio enhancements temporarily too, if the jack detects the plug but stays silent.

On a Mac, open System Settings, Sound, Output, and select the headphones once they appear. Centre the balance slider. If stereo has collapsed strangely into one channel, check System Settings, Accessibility, Audio, and switch off Play stereo audio as mono. That setting is deliberate accessibility behaviour rather than a fault, and it’s easy to enable by accident.

After changing anything, unplug and replug the headphones once so the socket’s detect pin re-registers. Laptops that display “Headphones” while stubbornly playing through the speakers almost always need that.

When cleaning doesn’t fix it

Inside the socket there’s a small mechanical switch that tells the computer whether something is plugged in. It can stick in either direction, and each failure looks different.

Stuck open means the computer never switches over to headphones, so audio keeps coming out of the speakers even with the plug in. Stuck closed means the computer thinks headphones are connected when they aren’t, so the speakers stay silent all the time.

Plugging and unplugging a few times sometimes frees the switch. Persistent false detection generally means the port needs replacing, and no driver work will change that.

There’s also a wiring standard difference worth knowing about. Combo headphone and microphone jacks come in two pinouts, CTIA and OMTP, and older accessories occasionally use the other one. If a headset with an inline mic behaves oddly while a plain stereo plug works perfectly, that mismatch is your answer rather than a failing amplifier.

Wired, Bluetooth, and USB-C are different circuits

This trips people up constantly. A headphone jack not working on a laptop while Bluetooth plays perfectly proves only that the digital audio path is healthy. It says nothing about the analogue port, which has its own amplifier and its own physical connector. The reverse holds too: silent Bluetooth alongside a working jack is a pairing or earbud problem.

USB-C dongles and USB audio adapters register as separate output devices in their own right. If you’ve moved from a built-in 3.5 mm socket to a dongle, you need to select that device explicitly. A failing dongle mimics broken earbuds very convincingly, so try another adapter before writing off a pair of headphones.

For checking speakers without any headset involved, a left and right speaker sweep confirms the machine can still play stereo with nothing plugged in. That keeps jack faults cleanly separate from a muted system or a failed onboard amplifier.

Single earbud failures on true wireless

Wireless buds fail differently from anything with a cable, so the 3.5 mm advice above mostly doesn’t apply.

A left earbud that stopped working after a drop is usually that bud’s battery or its pairing state rather than anything on the phone. Put both buds in the case and charge them fully, take both out, forget the device in your Bluetooth settings, reset them using the manufacturer’s case button sequence, and pair from scratch. If one bud still never shows a charge or refuses to join the stereo pair after a proper reset, no amount of phone-side troubleshooting will bring it back.

Bluetooth headbands still respect the system balance slider, incidentally. A wireless link doesn’t bypass a mixer that’s been panned hard to one side.

On a PC, headphones that connect over Bluetooth but produce nothing often mean Windows kept the speakers as the default output while the headset registered only its microphone endpoint. In Sound settings, choose the stereo or headphones entry for that device rather than the hands-free telephony one, which sounds dreadful anyway.

Hear each ear on its own

With the port clean, the plug fully seated, and the right output device selected, the last step is hearing each channel on its own. Open a left and right channel check and listen for the left-only tone in your left ear and the right-only tone in your right. It runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

If the same side is silent here and on every other device you try, replace the cable or the buds. If the isolation only fails on this one jack, particularly with crackling as the plug moves, get the port serviced.

Frequently asked questions

A plug that isn't pushed all the way in is the usual answer, because the contacts along the plug don't all reach their pins. Lint packed into the port, a bent plug, a worn cable near the strain relief, or a balance slider pushed to one side all produce the same symptom.
