Touchscreen not working — fix dead zones, ghost touches, and unresponsive screens

Touch problems are physical far more often than they are digital. A lifting screen protector, a damp panel, or a crack in the digitizer layer explains most of them before drivers enter the picture.

Take the protector off before anything else

Screen protectors cause a genuinely surprising share of touch problems, and removing one takes thirty seconds. Cheap film with dust trapped underneath or an edge that’s started lifting creates dead patches and phantom taps in equal measure. Tempered glass protectors that sit slightly proud of the bezel tend to swallow edge swipes specifically, which people usually blame on a gesture setting.

Take it off, clean the glass properly, and retest before you go anywhere near Device Manager. If touch comes back, you’ve saved yourself an afternoon.

While the protector is off, deal with moisture too. Capacitive panels are looking for skin, and water droplets look enough like a fingertip to trigger input on their own. A panel that’s still damp after cleaning will misbehave until it’s completely dry. Condensation from bringing a cold device into a warm room produces exactly the “it started tapping by itself” reports that sound like a haunting.

Cases and magnetic mounts belong in the same category. Thick cases interfere with edge sensitivity and palm rejection, so if an iPad screen is only unresponsive around the margins, take it out of the case and try again.

One thing not to do: don’t scrub a cracked panel with cleaning fluid hoping something will improve. Clean it gently, dry it fully, then decide.

Cracks and liquid under the glass

The LCD underneath can look completely fine while the touch layer above it is fractured. That’s why a screen with a perfect picture can be entirely unresponsive in one corner.

If the dead area lines up with a visible crack, that’s your answer and there isn’t a software fix. Pressure damage matters too, and it doesn’t always leave the classic star-shaped crack. A laptop carried in a bag with a wallet pressed against the lid, or a phone sat on, can lose a strip of touch sensitivity with nothing visible at all.

Liquid that has crept under the glass usually spreads its effects rather than staying in one neat patch, and the area often changes shape over a few days as the moisture moves.

What each symptom rules out

A completely unresponsive screen, including at the sign-in screen, calls for a force restart or a driver check first, then hardware.

A dead zone in one area is nearly always physical, since drivers very rarely kill a single rectangle while leaving the rest working.

Ghost touches mean moisture and protectors first, and a failing controller second.

Lag or dropped multi-touch, where single taps land accurately but two or more fingers don’t, suggests an overlay, heavy system load, or a digitizer starting to fail.

Touch failing while a mouse works perfectly is a useful split on Windows specifically, because it separates the touch device from the pointer stack and tells you exactly which entry to look for in Device Manager.

Windows

For a Windows touch screen not working, open Device Manager and expand Human Interface Devices. Look for an entry called HID-compliant touch screen, though some manufacturers use their own name for it. If it’s disabled, enable it. If it shows a warning symbol, note the error code, then uninstall the device and reboot so Windows reloads its own driver. Leave the driver package alone unless you knowingly installed a custom one.

Convertible laptops sometimes leave touch half-disabled after flipping between tablet and laptop mode, or after a manufacturer utility updates itself. Close those utilities and retest in both orientations. A touchscreen that only fails when the hinge is folded right back is usually the mode switch or a cable under strain rather than any setting.

Safe Mode is worth trying if you’ve installed pen or touch software. If touch works there, uninstall whichever digitizer utility you added most recently.

Worth mentioning since it comes up: Macs don’t have touchscreens, so panel checks need an iPad, a Windows machine, or a Chromebook. If you’re inspecting an area of the display for damage next to a dead touch zone, a dead-pixel colour sweep will show you the LCD clearly, though it won’t exercise the touch layer at all.

Chromebooks, iPhones, and iPads

On a Chromebook, the sign-in screen and guest mode do most of the diagnostic work for you. Touch that fails in guest mode and at sign-in is hardware or firmware, so book a repair rather than hunting through settings. Touch that works in guest mode but not your own profile points at a setting, an extension, or a management policy. School Chromebooks in particular can have touch disabled centrally, so check with whoever administers them before assuming the panel is broken.

For an iPhone or iPad that won’t respond, force restart it using Apple’s sequence for your exact model, since it differs between Face ID and Home button devices. Take the case and protector off, dry the glass, and try again. If the screen stopped responding after a drop or shows a liquid mark, prioritise getting a backup off it over further troubleshooting.

There are a couple of software possibilities worth eliminating on iPadOS. Guided Access restricts where you can tap, and touch accommodations under Accessibility can make the screen feel broken by changing how long you need to hold a touch. If a restart brought touch back briefly, check both of those.

Android tablets and phones vary too much by manufacturer for a single set of steps, but a force restart plus a safe-mode boot, where the maker supports it, will separate a wedged system interface from a genuinely dead digitizer. Dead zones that survive both are panel-level faults.

Dead zones and ghost touches are different problems

It’s worth treating these separately, because they lead to different conclusions.

A dead zone never registers anything. Map it by dragging slowly across the glass and noting exactly where the trail stops and starts again. Once you can match that gap to a crack, a bubble in a protector, or a corner that took an impact, the software investigation is over.

Ghost touches add input you didn’t make. The cursor jumps, on-screen keyboards type by themselves, windows drag across the desktop unaided. Dry the panel thoroughly and remove the protector. There’s also an uncommon but real cause worth knowing: a cheap or damaged charger can couple electrical noise into the chassis on some aluminium laptops, producing phantom touches only while plugged in. Unplug it and see whether the behaviour stops.

Laggy multi-touch alongside accurate single taps can be thermal throttling or a controller starting to fail. Note whether four and five finger gestures drop out while one finger still tracks perfectly, because that detail is genuinely useful on a repair ticket.

Map the whole surface before replacing the panel

With the glass clean and dry, protectors removed, and the touch driver enabled, check every part of the screen rather than just the middle. Open a multi-touch dead-zone check in a touch-capable browser and drag until every region has been painted, then try two to five fingers if your panel supports multi-touch. It runs locally and nothing is uploaded.

Gaps that never fill in, or marks that appear when you aren’t touching the screen, give you something concrete to show a repair shop instead of another round of guesswork in Settings.
