Mouse not working — fix wireless, laptop, Logitech, and Magic Mouse
A pointer that won't move is far more often a flat battery, a touchpad someone switched off with an Fn key, or a Bluetooth link that dropped overnight than it is a dead sensor.
Work out which mouse you’re actually fixing
“My mouse isn’t working” covers three completely different pieces of hardware, and mixing them up is why so much troubleshooting goes nowhere.
A wireless mouse depends on batteries, a radio link, and either Bluetooth or a small USB receiver. Every one of those can fail on its own.
A wired USB mouse only needs a working port and a cable that hasn’t been chewed by a chair wheel. Bear in mind that plenty of mice sold as USB are actually 2.4 GHz dongles in disguise, and those behave like wireless mice.
A laptop touchpad is a different device entirely, and it has its own on-off switch buried in the settings, plus usually a function key. When someone says their laptop mouse stopped working, this is what they mean most of the time, and it’s rarely broken.
Before going further, plug in the cheapest wired mouse you own. If the pointer moves, your ports and the operating system are healthy, and everything below narrows to the specific device that failed.
Reading the symptom
The way the mouse fails tells you where to look.
If the cursor doesn’t move anywhere, including on the desktop, you’re looking at power or the wireless link. If it moves but clicks do nothing, the problem is button mapping or a failing micro-switch. Jumping and freezing usually means the surface or the sensor, sometimes wireless interference. A dead or jumpy scroll wheel is normally encoder wear rather than a general mouse failure. And a single press that registers as a double-click is switch chatter, which is a mechanical problem that no OS setting will genuinely fix.
Batteries, pairing, and ports
For a wireless mouse, replace the batteries first, even if the LED still lights up. There’s enough charge to run the indicator long after there isn’t enough for reliable tracking.
Re-pair over Bluetooth while sitting right next to the computer, or unplug and reseat the USB receiver. Front-panel hubs and USB 3 ports are electrically noisy, so a rear port on a desktop is usually more reliable. If the pointer dies whenever something vibrates the desk near a tiny nano receiver, a short USB extension cable moving the dongle away from the chassis often fixes it outright.
Airplane mode is worth checking too. It cuts Bluetooth mice dead while leaving wired USB mice untouched, which makes for a quick and conclusive test.
For a wired mouse, try a different port, skip any unpowered hub, and test it on a second computer if you can. If the operating system never lists the device at all, in Device Manager on Windows or System Information on a Mac, the cable or the controller inside the mouse has gone.
Windows
Windows owns most “how to fix a mouse” searches, and a few of its settings look exactly like hardware failure.
Start with the touchpad if that’s what’s dead. Open Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Touchpad, and make sure it’s switched on. There’s usually an option that turns the pad off whenever a mouse is connected, so untick that if you want both. Then look along the function row for a touchpad icon, often with a small LED. Lenovo, HP, and Dell all ship their own variation of that key, and it’s easy to hit by accident.
For button behaviour, go to Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Mouse, and check the primary button, pointer speed, and double-click speed. If one press keeps opening things twice, that’s usually switch chatter rather than an over-sensitive setting, and dropping the double-click speed is a workaround rather than a repair.
In Device Manager, under Mice and other pointing devices, uninstalling the problem device and rebooting lets Windows reload its own driver. Don’t remove the driver package unless you deliberately installed a custom one. After feature updates, a leftover manufacturer filter driver sometimes breaks the precision touchpad while USB mice keep working, and Safe Mode is a quick way to prove a third-party overlay is involved.
For Bluetooth mice, remove the device entirely, restart the machine, and pair again. Dual-mode mice that support both a dongle and Bluetooth should be used on one path at a time while you’re diagnosing.
macOS
For an Apple mouse or any Bluetooth mouse on a Mac, open System Settings and go to Mouse, or Trackpad for the built-in pad. If right-click seems to do nothing, check that secondary click is enabled, since it isn’t always on by default. Look at the battery level in the Bluetooth menu too, because Magic hardware degrades gradually rather than failing outright as charge drops.
A Magic Mouse that stops working after a macOS update is nearly always charge, Bluetooth state, or a dirty underside. Charge it fully, turn Bluetooth off and on, remove the device, and pair it again next to the Mac. Skip the old SMC and NVRAM reset key combinations you may remember from Intel Macs, because the correct steps depend on your chip generation and Apple’s current guidance is the one to follow.
The login window is a useful dividing line here too. A pointer that works before you sign in but not after suggests accessibility software or a shortcut controlling the pointer. Nothing at all at the login window means wireless or hardware, so grab a wired mouse.
Chromebooks
Open Settings, Device, then Mouse and touchpad, and check the touchpad is enabled along with speed and tap-to-click. The wording shifts slightly between ChromeOS releases.
Guest mode is the fast check. If the pad or mouse works for a guest but not in your profile, an extension or a profile setting is responsible. School and work Chromebooks can also have policies that disable external mice or block remapping, so if the settings are greyed out, talk to whoever runs the admin console before buying hardware.
Brand quirks worth knowing
Logitech
Unifying and Logi Bolt receivers strongly prefer a rear desktop port to a front hub. Logitech Options and Options+ can leave a mouse half-paired after an update, so re-pair with Logitech’s utility and test with Options quit entirely. Side buttons that appear to do nothing in a browser are often bound to Back and Forward at the system level rather than broken. Lightspeed gaming mice that only misbehave inside one game are almost always fighting with an overlay or an in-game binding.
Apple Magic Mouse
Charge state first, always. A Magic Mouse that connects but tracks poorly usually needs its sensor window cleaned and a less glossy surface. Re-pair after travel, since the pairing often goes stale in a bag. Natural scrolling reversing the direction is a preference, not a broken encoder.
Cheap and no-name wireless
Budget optical sensors genuinely struggle on glass and high-gloss resin desks. A five-pound mat separates “the sensor can’t see anything” from “the mouse is broken” in about thirty seconds, and it’s worth trying before anything more involved.
Surfaces, sensors, and scroll wheels
Glass desks, gloss finishes, and some patterned fabrics make optical and laser sensors jump or freeze entirely. If the cursor behaves perfectly on a mousemat, you don’t need new drivers.
Erratic wireless behaviour that gets noticeably worse near an external hard drive or a cheap hub is interference, and relocating the receiver fixes it. A scroll wheel that skips every few notches regardless of what you’re scrolling has a worn encoder. One that only misbehaves in a single application is a software problem.
Chatter deserves a special mention because it’s so often misdiagnosed. A mouse that double-clicks on a single press has a worn switch, and Windows being “too sensitive” is almost never the real explanation. Timestamps are what settle it: two events under roughly 90 ms apart from one physical press is conclusive.
Check every button before you buy a new one
Once the batteries, pairing, touchpad toggles, and vendor software are all sorted, confirm that the buttons and wheel genuinely register. Open a live button and scroll check, click left, right, middle, and any side buttons, spin the wheel both ways, and watch for a chatter warning on single presses. It all runs locally and nothing gets uploaded.
If clicks never appear at all, the operating system isn’t seeing button events, so go back to the driver and pairing steps. If everything registers but chatter keeps tripping, budget for a switch repair or a new mouse rather than another afternoon of driver reinstalls.
