Keyboard not working — how to fix laptop, wireless, and brand keyboards

Before you price up a replacement, rule out the boring causes: a flat battery, an accessibility toggle someone switched on by accident, or a driver that broke during the last big update.

Four things to try before anything else

Most keyboard problems come down to something you can rule out in about five minutes, so start here rather than with drivers.

Plug in any cheap USB keyboard you can find. If that one types, your ports and the operating system’s input handling are both healthy, and the fault lives in the built-in deck or the wireless link. That single test saves an enormous amount of wasted effort.

Restart the machine properly, not just close the lid. A surprising number of “dead” laptop keyboards come back after a full shutdown, because a firmware controller or a background utility was wedged.

If the keyboard is wireless, put fresh batteries in it even if the indicator light still blinks. A blinking LED means there’s enough power for the radio, not enough for reliable key scanning. Low batteries produce exactly the symptoms people describe as random dead keys.

Finally, reboot into BIOS or firmware setup and try typing there. Keys that work in firmware but die once the OS loads are a software problem, full stop. Keys that fail in firmware too are a hardware problem, and no amount of driver reinstalling will change that.

What the failing keys tell you

The pattern of failure narrows things down faster than the brand on the lid does.

Nothing types anywhere, including the login screen? Look at the OS-level input stack and the physical connection before you blame any single app.

Built-in keys dead but a USB keyboard fine? The deck, its ribbon cable, or a laptop-specific filter driver are your suspects.

A handful of scattered keys failing? That’s almost certainly debris, a spill, or worn switches. A whole row or column going at once is a different story and usually means the flex cable or the controller behind it.

Keys that repeat, stick, or fire twice? Check your key-repeat settings before you assume the switches are shot.

Windows: Filter Keys, drivers, and the Fn lock

Windows accounts for most “laptop keyboard not working” searches, and several of its own features look convincingly like hardware failure.

Filter Keys and Sticky Keys are the usual culprits. Holding Shift for eight seconds enables Sticky Keys, and Filter Keys makes Windows ignore brief or repeated presses, which feels exactly like a dying keyboard. Go to Settings, then Accessibility, then Keyboard on Windows 11, or Ease of Access on Windows 10, and switch both off.

Next, open Device Manager and expand Keyboards. A yellow warning icon means you should note the error code before doing anything else. Uninstalling the keyboard device and rebooting lets Windows reload its own driver, which fixes a lot of cases. Don’t delete the driver package unless you know you installed a custom one. After a major Windows feature update, a leftover manufacturer filter driver is a very common reason for a laptop keyboard dying while USB keyboards carry on working normally.

Convertible laptops from Lenovo, HP, and Dell sometimes leave the deck disabled after flipping between tablet and laptop mode. Flip it back and forth once. While you’re there, check the Fn lock, because a locked function row sends media and brightness commands instead of F1 through F12, which people frequently report as broken keys.

If you’re still stuck, boot into Safe Mode. Safe Mode strips out third-party overlays such as RGB lighting utilities, key remappers, and remote-support agents. If your keys come back, uninstall whichever keyboard utility you added most recently.

macOS and iPadOS

On a Mac keyboard that isn’t working, open System Settings and go to Keyboard. Check the layout, the key repeat rate, and the modifier key mapping. The deliberate delay on Caps Lock is normal macOS behaviour, not a fault. If your modifiers feel scrambled after swapping keyboards, Keyboard Shortcuts then Modifier Keys will let you reset them.

For any wireless board, Apple’s own or otherwise, start with Bluetooth. Turn it off and on, remove the device, then pair it again sitting close to the Mac. Low batteries cause dropped keystrokes long before the keyboard vanishes from the menu bar.

There’s a useful split between the login window and your user session. If you can type your password but the keyboard dies after sign-in, look at accessibility software that monitors input, or an input source that’s got stuck. If even the login window ignores the built-in MacBook keyboard while accepting USB input, treat it as hardware and run Apple Diagnostics.

An iPad keyboard not working is nearly always Bluetooth sleep, a Smart Keyboard connector that’s dirty, or Guided Access blocking input. Check Settings, then Bluetooth, and Settings, then General, then Keyboard. For Magic Keyboard and Smart Folio cases, restart the iPad, wipe the connector pins, and try typing in Notes before you blame the tablet.

Chromebooks

Chromebook keyboard problems split cleanly. Open Settings, then Device, then Keyboard, and look at whether the Search or Launcher key has been remapped, whether auto-repeat is on, and how the top row is configured.

Guest mode is your fastest diagnostic. Sign out and use the Chromebook as a guest. If typing works there but not in your profile, the problem is a profile setting or an extension you installed, and you can fix it without touching hardware. If keys do nothing in guest mode and nothing at the sign-in screen, book a repair, because ChromeOS has essentially nothing left for you to reinstall.

Brand quirks worth knowing

Logitech

Unifying and Logi Bolt receivers are fussy about which USB port they sit in. A rear port on a desktop beats a front-panel hub every time. Logitech Options and Options+ can also leave a board half-paired after an update, so re-pair using Logitech’s own utility and try the keyboard with Options completely closed.

Lenovo

Yoga hinges and other convertibles put repeated stress on the keyboard ribbon, so intermittent faults that change when you move the screen are worth taking seriously. Lenovo Vantage sits in the input path too. On ThinkPads, a keyboard connector that wasn’t seated properly after a DIY RAM upgrade is a classic.

HP

HP Support Assistant occasionally ships filter drivers that break after Windows feature updates, and the Device Manager uninstall-and-reboot trick clears most of those. HP’s action keys default to media functions, so hold Fn or toggle the Fn lock before deciding the F-row is dead.

Dell

Dell SupportAssist belongs in the same “disable it and retest” category as HP’s tools. On Latitude and XPS machines, check whether an external keyboard plugged into a dock is stealing input. After clearing CMOS, look up your exact model’s service manual, because the BIOS option names vary between generations.

Surface Pro

Type Covers rely on a magnetic connector and matching firmware. Reseat the cover, clean the contacts with a dry cloth, and install Surface firmware through Windows Update. If you can borrow a second cover, that immediately tells you whether the tablet’s pogo pins or the cover itself is at fault. A cover that cuts out when you flex the hinge is a connector problem.

MacBook

Butterfly-era MacBook keyboards were genuinely unreliable, and Apple’s keyboard service programme covered many of those models, so check your serial number for eligibility before paying for a top-case replacement. Magic Keyboards that lag usually need charging or a clean Bluetooth pairing.

Keys that stick, repeat, or ghost

Crumbs and spills need cleaning, not another driver pass. Power the machine down, turn it upside down, and brush the debris out. Resist the urge to flood the switches with cleaning fluid. Membrane laptop keys that have been through a sugary drink often fail in clusters, and software won’t bring those traces back.

If several keys stop registering only when you press them together, you’ve probably hit the rollover limit of the keyboard, which is common on membrane boards. That’s expected behaviour rather than a fault.

Characters repeating on their own can be an OS key-repeat setting, a stuck switch, or a controller on its way out. Compare the repeat settings under Settings, Time & language, Typing on Windows, or System Settings, Keyboard on a Mac, before you spend money on parts.

Check every key before you spend money

Once you’ve sorted the settings, batteries, and pairing, confirm that each key actually registers. Open a live key-by-key check and press everything that was misbehaving, including the modifiers, arrows, and function row. Everything runs in your browser and nothing gets uploaded.

If a key still refuses to register here but works fine in BIOS, go back to the driver steps above. If it fails in firmware setup as well, you’ve got a clear-cut hardware fault to take to a repair shop or a warranty claim.
