How to fix stick drift — PS5, PS4, Xbox, and Switch controllers
When the camera pans or your character creeps with your thumbs nowhere near the sticks, start with software and calibration before you decide the modules are worn out.
What stick drift actually is
Stick drift is the stick reporting movement when you are not touching it. On screen that looks like a camera that never settles, a cursor that creeps, or a character that walks on its own. The browser can show the same thing as axis values that refuse to rest near 0,0.
In most consumer pads the cause is mechanical wear inside the analogue module. Classic DualShock, DualSense, Xbox, and many Switch sticks use potentiometers: a wiper slides along a resistive track, and the voltage at rest is what the console reads as “centre.” Over hundreds of hours that track wears, the wiper oxidises, or dust changes the contact, and the resting voltage stops meaning centre. A tired return spring or grit packed under the rubber skirt causes the same symptom without the track being worn through. Firmware that never finished a calibration pass is rarer, but it’s worth ruling out because checking costs nothing.
So three different things produce one symptom. Settings can imitate drift, dirt can cause it temporarily, and a worn track causes it permanently. Work through them in that order before you buy any parts.
Rule out software before you open anything
Start with settings, not isopropyl. Plenty of “dead” sticks turn out to be fine hardware behind a bad setting or a calibration that never finished, and five minutes here saves a teardown you didn’t need.
Open the deadzone or stick sensitivity page in the game or the system menu and raise the inner deadzone a notch. Competitive shooters often ship with almost no deadzone, which is enough to make tiny resting noise feel like a pull. If widening it stops the creep you haven’t repaired anything, you’ve only masked a small offset, but you’ve also proved the sticks still track properly when you move them on purpose.
Update the controller firmware next. Consoles and first-party PC apps ship stick calibrations inside those updates, so a pad that started drifting after a battery swap or a few months in a drawer sometimes settles once the update lands and you’ve restarted both the controller and the console.
Recalibrate if the platform lets you. Some games and a few system menus will reset the resting point for you. Do it with the sticks completely untouched and the pad flat on a desk.
Finally, disconnect cleanly. Forget the Bluetooth pairing, power-cycle the pad, and try a wired USB connection if you have a cable. A flaky wireless link injects brief axis spikes that feel exactly like intermittent drift. If a second controller on that same cable is rock solid while this one creeps, you’ve narrowed it to the pad itself.

The fault is the same across consoles and PC pads, and only the menus and update tools change. Work the checklist for your controller, then come back to cleaning and hardware if the stick still walks at rest.
How to fix stick drift PS5 (DualSense)
On the console, open Settings, then Accessories, then Controller (General), and install any DualSense firmware update. In whatever game you’re playing, find the stick or deadzone options and raise the left- and right-stick deadzones slightly. On PC, use Sony’s firmware utility or a trusted updater, then retest over a cable.
Drift that survives both of those is common on the DualSense. Sony has run repair programmes in some regions, so check your warranty status with the serial number before you open the shell. How to fix stick drift Xbox One and Xbox Series pads
On console, check for accessory updates in Settings. On PC, open Xbox Accessories (or the Xbox app), apply the firmware, then run the app’s stick calibration if it’s offered for your pad. Many Xbox titles expose per-stick deadzones under controller settings, so bump those before you assume the pots are dead.

In some markets Nintendo has repaired drifting Joy-Cons even outside the usual warranty window, so check that before you buy a third-party pair. How to get rid of stick drift by cleaning
Cleaning helps when grit or skin oils have worked their way under the skirt. It won’t help a track that’s already polished through. Power the controller off first, then blow short bursts of compressed air around the base of each stick while tilting the stick through its full range so the skirt lifts slightly. Don’t jam the nozzle under the rubber and hold it down, because that forces liquid propellant into the module.
If air isn’t enough, lightly dampen a cotton bud with isopropyl alcohol, 90% or higher, and wipe around the outside of the stick base only. Never pour alcohol into the housing, and let everything dry fully before you reconnect. Soft, intermittent drift and sticky returns often improve after this. A resistive track that has already worn a flat spot won’t come back from a clean.
When it is hardware — warranty, repair, or replace
If the stick still reports movement at rest after firmware, deadzones, recalibration, and a careful clean, it’s a hardware fault.
If the pad is still in warranty, or covered by one of the manufacturer drift programmes, use that first. Record a short clip or grab a screenshot of the resting axis values so support can see this isn’t a complaint about settings.
If it’s out of warranty and you want this controller back, a reputable repair shop can replace the stick modules. Hall-effect and TMR modules are the durable upgrade, because they sense position magnetically instead of scraping a contact along a track. Doing it yourself is realistic on many DualShock, DualSense, Xbox, and Pro Controller shells, but there are plastic clips, ribbon cables, and sometimes soldering involved, so buy a spare pad first if you’ve never opened one.
Replacement is often cheaper than repair, mind you. A heavily worn budget pad with cracked shell plastics isn’t worth a module kit plus your afternoon.
What a browser can and cannot do
A page running in your browser can read the Gamepad API, which covers button presses, trigger depth, and live stick axes. That’s enough to see drift for yourself: resting values sitting off centre, or a stick that never quite returns after a flick. What it can’t do is recalibrate console firmware, revive a worn potentiometer, or file a warranty claim on your behalf.
The measurement is there to tell you which layer you’re in. If the axes sit still until you touch them, either your software steps worked or the hardware was never the problem. If they keep crawling with your thumbs off the pad after every firmware and deadzone change, stop chasing settings and start thinking about warranty, repair, or a replacement.
Verify the fix on a live stick check
Once you think you’re done, whether that was a deadzone change, a firmware update, a clean, or a full repair, open a live stick and button check. Leave both sticks alone and watch the dots, which should sit dead-centre. Then sweep each stick through its range and check the motion is smooth with no preferred lean. Nothing is uploaded and the numbers stay in your tab.
If the resting point is clean here but one particular game still pulls, go back to that game’s deadzone and sensitivity curve. If it drifts here too, the pad needs hardware attention.
